The Challenge

this week was to take a black and white of a pet and paint it in color thinking all the while
about value. Dark, medium, light. This is Sage, our son's chocolate lab. (Mine is a black lab, thereby reducing the challenge). It came together pretty well except for that one ear. It might get a touch up!

NFS but fun.

Ponds along the river

Wednesday we painted at Schollenberger Park just off of the Petaluma River. Here you see a section of the ponds that have held dredging waters. It was a beautiful morning and the S curves were so gentle and lovely. I ended up with this almost abstract as it captured the essence of the moment better than any other attempt I made.

Another study

Here is another painting of the Washington barn I posted about a few days ago. I definitely like it better with the addition of color. While the grey patch in the barn is correct according to value, I would like it cut back a bit more. This one is lively and so is the tree. Is it dancing........maybe. More things worked out, a few more to go.

Spent the morning in the studio working on another painting only to scrape it off. But that is a good thing as I stood back (many, many times) and toward the end I saw a huge problem. It will be easily solved but I had to scrape.

I am going for a walk on the beach. That's my answer right now.

Washington Barn

Many of you saw this photograph on my facebook page that I posted during our Washington vacaation. Here is my first study. There will be more as I am working out several things. The shadow is too dark and how much of the barn should be visible. Is the painting about the tree or the barn. The tree is pretty awesome. But then so is the barn. You may certainly voice your opinion. I would love it. So this one was fun and I will do more. This is not a  painting for sale. It is just a sharing of my process.

Daily Paintworks Challenge.......Upside down

Here is another attempt at the river's edge. For the Daily Paintworks Challenge we needed to paint upside down. I have several references for this scene so I cut one out at 6" x 6" and marked a one inch grid on it. Then I painted each small square. I only needed small adjustments when I turned the painting right side up.  It was a great challenge.

Great Class

Another great class on Wednesday. It was a beautiful day on the Petaluma River, starting with fog and breaking to a fresh clear sky. This painting was done before the blues started to show. It is a small section of the bank right next to where I was standing.  I was taken with the old piers sticking up out of the water and the lovely shadows.  I also took photos of the bank when the sky was blue. We will see how it differs.

Another work in progress

This is a large painting I have been working on for some time. Stampede Lake, up in the Sierra's off of Highway 80 is a lake we love to visit. There are always geese, coming and going. These geese were feeding and enjoying posing for us. I like the geese in the background, I think I finally got the gesture of the front goose, so the water remains the question mark. Too intense........not sure. But the sky was blue, blue and so the water was blue, blue. Her head and neck  are in the  center........do not like that!
Cropping ideas............?

Another revisit

Back from vacation and cleaning up lots of stuff in the studio.  This  proud hen had a very in you face green background which was way too hard to view. One day I just greyed it out and then it all worked so much better. Black and white hens are a challenge so this one has a bit more color here than she has in real life. I love her posture.

Revisiting

Have you ever had a painting in your studio that you constantly revisit? Oh, it needs more lights, more darks, whatever.  I am finally saying I am done with this version but, trust me, there are layers of paint. And a multitude of colors.  Finished it is.

And as I am away for a bit, my hope is to post some drawings or at least photos of future subjects.
All good.........

River canoe

Art class painted on the Petaluma River last week and I found this little scene to be fascinating. Love the shapes and the shadows. I did a smaller version with too much mid-tone. So I started from scratch  and the second time I feel I did a much better job of defining values.
