The Daily Paintworks Challenge is all about sunflowers this week.  I did one with deeper golden colors and it was just fine.......and then it wasn't. Scrape, scrape.Truly the story of my week.
My second attempt I kept basic. I did a couple of art quilts with this composition so I am familiar with it and fond of it also. When does" keep it simple" not work? I cannot think of a time.
Fun to do and I want to do more......but so many paintings, so little time. My favorite part......the edges. Do you have one?

Diagonal roses

Home from vacation and ready to paint!  This one is for the Daily Paintworks Challenge this week. It is all about composition and trying to push yourself out of your present boundaries. I was just so happy to paint that I did a favorite........diagonals. Hopefully it is somewhat of an unusual composition for me, but I would not put money on it!

Is this a  painting or what. Wonderful harbor and atmosphere in Poulsbo, WA.

This is a Helen scene.....on the way to Sequim, WA

Below you see why we came....Mt Olympus.
It was glorious.

Yesterday was art class and we were at the turning basin in downtown Petaluma. This particular boat took my fancy so here you see me practicing both boats and keeping a skyline back, just suggesting it.
Lots learned, the chief one being........more paint. Mix more paint.

This is a 6 inch study of a scene at Serene Lakes. I tried to paint it large but failed. Now I am thinking.....why did I paint it on a 20 x 24 when I liked it square. I do hope to develop the scene more as it shows lovely morning light coming down the valley.

So where am I?  Learning, painting, with never a stroke wasted.
Have a great day.

Another layer

The next layer involved adding more shape to the large pear and then more squares so the motif continues around the painting.

The shape is more pear like and those little squares are so much fun to do.
And yes, there will be another layer.

A Rose and another layer

So much fun today to paint.  This rose was done after a warm up or two. I am after form and simple strokes. Feeling like I am on the road at last!

6 x 6
oil must be at least layer three. I created these little boxes and then drew random pear shapes in them. I did not fuss or change anything. It is only a layer in a long process. Below you can see a close up.  It is very freeing to not know where this will end.......

Check out Tuesday the 21st for the original painting. This is with a corrected palette. It is much more harmonious.

Must do flowers

I took several stems from the garden and plopped them in a vase. I just needed to paint,
right at that moment. Here you see two layers of painting.

Busy, busy

Art class on Wednesday and I decided I would draw. Since it was on the fly, meaning without models, I just worked on my basics which I have ignored for too long. The sketch below just shows that I was actually doing something............hunting for the S curve. I did not get any "finished" products.......just practiced. There were lots of construction workers on the move......that was great practice.

This is the large painting I worked on last week. I knew it was only a first layer.
My next move on it, which I have started, is to limit the palette even further and see where it goes. And I need to paint my word which is BIG, not repetition as it would seem. I love using the big brush and making strong strokes. When I correct the shape on the next layer, I will post. I am hoping for an afternoon of painting. The morning sure was great.

Yes, I got to paint! And now the pear is BIG and BOLD.
And I am sure.......this is not the last layer.
Closer for sure but still there might be fun places to go with it.
Big and Bold is 20 x 24
That is as large as I am comfortable with for now.
