Plein Air

Today was a beautiful day in Sonoma County. It got warm but this morning we painted fairly early at a local Dahlia Farm.  I was taken with both the sky and the buildings sitting close to the horizon line, comfy in the shade of trees. They were peeking out in the morning light. The sky, to me, always has something going on. Loved painting this one.

First Egg

The Daily Paintworks Challenge  http://www.dailypaintworks.com/Challenge/ this week is to paint an egg. Wow. I had never tackled that before so just arranging my composition was quite a job. It took at least two eggs. I settled on the one above and did not see the Mickey Mouse head until much later. LOL lots.
At any rate it came out pretty well. More work needed on those shells. They are much more difficult than it would seem. And thanks to my instructor for all the works we have done on spheres.

Up to Date

So, in thinking about life, I reflect on my garden and what it brings to me. Lightness and an appreciation of beauty.   Little surprises peeking out here and there. New flowers for a new day. The list goes on.
Perhaps this little painting should be titled Lightness?

I am taking what I learned from 4 flowers which I have painted over many times now ( and you got to watch, for better or worse) and am applying it to this new work. Warm and cool definitely working but probably still a work in progress. I need to keep it in the corner of my eye for a few days.

Did you know there are red pears? They are delicious and the most beautiful shade of a deep, deep red. This little still life, 2 Pears and a Tomaato, was done for the Daily Paintworks Challenge last week.

Another challenge entry

I am still playing with the Daily Paintworks  http://www.dailypaintworks.com/Challenges challenge this week and also still using red as my main color. The beautiful greys are made just with red, green and white.  This  little rose bud was quite fun. And really leaning toward abstract!
You can see my first try at the above link.......2 Pears and a Tomato.
I did not know there were red pears. I painted them and then my grandson and I ate them!

Class was held in an old part of Petaluma with amazing Victorians all around. This doorway really interested me as it welcomes all with beautiful roses. I learned so much this week.........gorogeous greys and lavenders with a touch of orange........drawing.........color harmony..........etc.

Every week this one changes and I discover something new. It is my current textbook!

three then four

Last winter  I painted this scene very representationally, exactly as my eyes saw it.  Last week I got to what I have wanted for months...painting it my way........putting in the energy I wanted, the colors I love. If only barns could talk, laugh, tell stories of warm summer days.

This work had some offensive, to me, blues in it.  So I greyed them and played with the background. I am not sure I am done but I do love the blues knocked back. You saw this previously on the 13th labeled work in progress.

More class work

Here you have it. One of my favorite palettes. Purple and Green in almost any shade or tone. Our location had a stately and old palm tree so I spent my morning working on it.  I got so much but I did not get the most important part. Stately and or Old.

This is my second effort on a slightly larger board which made it easier to capture the gesture. I am thinking if I place it in a cityscape where it is actually located, I might be able to capture some of the feeling that this lacks. I will also offset the tree more to the left. It just kept creeping to the right on me!
Yes, I love feedback.

Works in Progress?

Here is the latest of what I am painting.  These pictures came out much too blue and too light. Another learning process to figure out how to correct that. The top work has about three layers of paint and is close to done if not done.  My favorite part?.........the background. LOL

11 x 14

Here I changed the composition slightly and have put down 2 layers so far. Now I will live with it for a couple of days and see what developes.
I just looked at both of these photos in Windows Picture Gallery which is what I use at work on the black and white screen.  Strong dark pattern for sure. Subtle yet strong.........

Number 7

At number 7 one really gets what it is all about.  Here I demonstrate that....strong, silent, lonely, surviving quite well. I do think she is showing off her body of strength!

And here is truck number 2.  More color, looser. Just a fun painting to do.

Here is this week's Daily Paintworks Challenge entry. A great old red pickup.
I will try again for deeper reds.

How about blue?

Really, how about blue?
Another study.
Going further abstract.
Hmmmm.

Colorful Studies

After my realistic studies of the little lonely tree at Helen Putnam Park the next step was to paint from an emotion. Being so windswept, I certainly thought of the tree as a survivor so here are my first two renditions of that feeling. Tomorrow I will apply another process to these paintings, taking them a little further along.

Number Three

Here is number three. This is a favorite challenge for me, isn't it?  Love the movement of the petals, the colors playing a song.

Color plus

Today class was fun, fun.  Our assignment was to paint considering the emotion of what we were observing. My last painting of the day which is shown here, was about the sky which includes, for me, the path. Onward and upward. How often have I said that. Simple palette, simple composition.
 I love it.
If you have something to say, just say it.
