Polka Dots

This week's challenge on Daily Paintworks is just to include polka dots. Bright polka dots on a little piece of fabric left over from a pre-school quilt. So sorry that the rose and the polka dots are minor, while the vase sings!

From a photograph of Prosser Lake above Truckee in Northern California .  I want to learn to paint from vacation pictures. This was fun but maybe not so believeable? Does that panel at the bottom really look like a reflection? On the up side, my trees are taking much less effort!  And it was a beautiful day.

Avocado and more

What do you paint when it is snowing and raining and gloomy?  An avocado!

And why did we come home from our little fishing trip early?
We had fun fishing on the first day, enjoyed the snow and rain on the second day and fled on the third day!

May 22, 2012

The Daily Paintworks challenge is two views this week.  Here are my coriopsis again in a favorite old bottle. Trying for representational yet loose.

I zoomed in for this view. The flowers were maily in shadow with just little tips of sunlight on them. A very light and airy scene so it was difficult to get enough darks.  Great challenge.

I revisited this barn scene to lay a little more color on the roof, siding and trees. It just wanted to be kicked up a notch.

Again and Again

Again and again refers to my love of barns.  These two, a few miles out of town, are falling into neglect along with a slightly tipsy silo from the "old days". My painting is very primitive right now and the decision is whether or not to leave it alone. Love the shapes. Loved laying down the paint.

My red roses are in full bloom.  They are such a challenge to paint so I go between representational and then maybe just a little abstract. It looks to me like I have not decided.  I will paint them again and move in one direction or the other.

One step at a time

Last week was a busy week for sure and I worked on lots of learning stuff that will not get posted here. You're welome.  Then on Friday I came home from work and I just needed to paint. Did not matter what,
just needed to do it. Quickly.  So I went out to the kitchen and picked up what was available. Always lemons around our house......and oh, a green apple.  This painting is also about shadows. I posted another one on Facebook that was shadows inspired the end of last week. I felt much better after painting. That is a very good thing.

One of my projects is to get more comfortable with painting from travel photos. They can seem overwhelming to me. Lots of editing to be done.  This scene in Ascona is from the very first day in Switzerland. I tried it once before and lost my dark pattern completely.  Here I have laid the darks down better along with including the hillside in the background. So while the figures remain stilted I am heading in the right direction.

Evolution

This is a larger abstract that I just revisited.  And then it transformed into this work. Don't as me how or why. Abstract does what it wants to do. Something just needed to emerge. I do know that Evolution is the correct name for it.  We can each decide what is evolving.

12 x 12

I really have been painting. It has just been a week of scrape off, scrape off.  This work is all about values and correct rendering of the physical subject. I pretty much have the rendering correct except for some small thing around the bottom of her face. Good thing Josie doesn't care. When I see it, I will know and I will correct it. Maybe the painting should be called pushing paint around as that is what I did!

20 Minutes and No More

This is what happens when you limit yourself to 20 minutes and no more. Lay down the paint. Leave it. And there is something to be said for the process!

Abstract again

Today in class we kept up our abstract work. When I returned home I spent 30 more minutes on it and came up with this. Color and motion. It can really be viewed from any side.
