Rose Challenge #2

This is my second effort (actually my third as the second was scraped off). Why is a pastel rose so much more difficult?  I really concentrated on my strokes but this was a more complicated work and not as confident as number one. But did I squint and look. And that is how I learn.

Rose Challenge

This week's challenge is actually called the rose challenge.
My goal was as few strokes as possible.
I will probably revisit this challenge as it is a great exercise.

Studies Finished

The finished studies were started in class last Wednesday. I really studied the tree, drew it, painted it and looked some more. Wind swept and lonely.  The next step in this process is to play with some colors, to deal with some emotions.
Paths are fun......wandering, challenging.

Red, Yellow and Blue

The Daily Paintworks Challenge this week is simple. Use red, yellow and blue and include three values within the colors. Simple?  Debatable.
Here is my offering. I allowed 45 minutes so there would be no fussing.
I limited my strokes (kind of)

And the Beat Goes On

Okay, not delighted but learned so much once again. And this is better. I toned down everything but the water so that the viewer could focus on the water. In this  painting, the water is where it is at, where I want the viewer to go. With that in mind, mission accomplished. This is my last posting reworked, not a new painting.

Yesterday we went off to a favorite local park and I worked on studies, trying to capture the colors and forms to then later paint a larger work or works.
The trees are scraped off so that I can work on their gestures more, one ssection is yet to be done and then the piece below is finished.  It was a great day at class.

This is really a process posting. I hope you enjoy. Please leave a comment if you have time. I love to hear from you..........
And thank you for looking.

Number Three

Definitely the best effort yet. I changed my palette. The only colors used are alizarin, ultramarine blue and cad med yellow with white as needed. It seems to hold together well and is warmer than the phthalo blue palette. I think I just wanted warmer. My eye is going too often to the bridge so  perhaps the background is not greyed back enough. Art class is tomorrow so that is a good question to ask. The really good news is that I got to paint today!

And Again

And again is a good title. I am going to paint this scene until I am delighted with the result. I like the values here but I am not as happy with my paint strokes. It might be because I scraped the paint off a time or two. So the saying goes, onward and upward.

Working with three values

This week in art class we discussed the three values and starting with those strong backbones. You have often read that I wondered if my darks were dark enough and lights, light enough. Not a problem here. This is the D Street Bridge in Petaluma, a scene many of us know so well. Now I need to paint it again, altering my palette, closing in on the beautiful flow of the river.

Back to Class

It is back to class after a month long break. Great to be back. Last year I painted this scene and it came out way to dark for me so when we revisited this location on the Petaluma River Turning Basin my intent was to lighten my work. I wanted the eye to go to the river and know about the bend.   If you like that building sitting on the right your eye can rest there. Mine does.

Home from vacation and trying to get back in gear.  This particular chicken took two days! The head was scraped over and over again. And when I declared the painting done.......I saw attitude!

6 x 6 , oil

You saw Blackie before I left on vacation.  She needed some editing and is stronger now. You can tell her body is slightly twisted and all her body lines are more confident.  She is sold and on her way to her new home......
